Fundraising is underway in 2020 to support the realization of North Division’s conceptual schoolyard redevelopment plan.

North Division High School’s conceptual redevelopment plan calls for removal of approximately 1,520 square feet of asphalt and replacing it with new green space and mixed-use recreation and educational areas. The design includes porous pavement and bioswales to slow the infiltration of water into the ground. The addition of native plantings and stormwater trees allow for unique spaces on the school grounds that can represent native Wisconsin ecosystems. Pending a more detailed survey, a large-scale underground cistern could also be built beneath the athletic field to further manage stormwater. The plan manages approximately 51,124 gallons of stormwater per rain event.

North Division’s conceptual plan defines two outdoor classrooms including a performance area with tiered seating and materials to support outdoor learning. Nearby green infrastructure including stormwater trees, bioswales, and native grasses will serve as unique learning environments. Educational and artistic signage throughout the school grounds will support student-curated tours and encourage learning through self-guided exploration. Proposed greenhouse improvements and potential community garden plots will further promote healthy food access for the surrounding neighborhood.

Vision in a Nutshell

North_nutshell.png

North Division High School would like to install a 100kW solar system on the school’s rooftop. This equates to approximately one acre of solar panels that would be utilized to offset energy consumption and costs at the school while supporting curricular connections to the engineering, finance & entrepreneurship, and information technology academies at North Division. This is addition to the plan calling for green infrastructure that can manage over 50,000 gallons of stormwater and two outdoor classrooms for this high school campus.
