The Map Files Available Here are for
the Google Earth App for Chrome, Phone, or Tablet

  • Have a Chromebook or want to quickly browse parts of the Milwaukee Community Map in the Chrome browser? No problem.

To open interactive maps in Google Earth for Chrome, just choose from the map options below.

Download the file to your device, then open Google Earth for Chrome, click in the sidebar on Projects>New Project>Import KML file from computer. (Older versions called this process My Places>Import KML file). Then select the file.*

Click on the eyeball to toggle it open or closed. We recommend viewing one file at a time and turning off the eyeballs of files not in use. Refer to this web page for Legends, Miranda’s Water Story Bubbles, and source info.

Note: These maps will also open in the Google Earth app for your smartphone or tablet. Just install the Google Earth app on your device, then open this web page in your device’s browser, click the link to download the file, and select “Open in Google Earth.”

Note: the interfaces for Google Earth for Chrome and the Google Earth Apps are updated frequently in ways that may change the accuracy of these directions. Be patient and try clicking around if things seem slightly different on your device. Or, if you run into a big problem, contact us for advice.

*Also note: when you first import the files, you may be asked to save them on your device. You may need to click "Save" and then "Allow." The next times you open Google Earth in Chrome or on your device, however, the files from previous sessions should still be there.

**Not all Milwaukee Community Map features are available for Chrome/Phone/Tablet and some features may render imperfectly on your device. For the most complete experience, download Google Earth Pro for Desktop to explore the Milwaukee Community Map in its entirety.

***Note, when accessing these files in Chrome, to open external links from placemarks, you will need to right-click and open links in a new tab or window. Placemark content may not render perfectly on all phones or screens depending on resolution and settings. Monitors with higher resolutions will have better success displaying placemarks in their entirety.

****If accessing directly from your phone, use a browser app like Safari or Chrome. If you use the Google Search app you will not get an option to download the file.
