Bring a Green & Healthy Schoolyard to Your School!

Learn how Milwaukee schools are selected for the redevelopment process.

Milwaukee Public Schools are working with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, the nonprofit Reflo and other project partners to select the 11th Cohort of green and healthy schoolyard redevelopment projects.

Recognizing that the redevelopment process is intended to attract significant investment into these schools, an equity-based approach has been developed based on need and enthusiasm. The criteria is understandably qualitative and to help make the determination, the larger Green Schools Consortium of Milwaukee is invited to help make the determination. The process involves invited schools to articulate their need and enthusiasm as selection committee participants have maps and other information available to help make their recommendations.

Five Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) will be selected this year to develop conceptual plans that include the feasible removal of asphalt and replacement with outdoor learning and play spaces that reduce stormwater runoff and promote ecoliteracy through STEAM learning opportunities. These efforts lay the groundwork for meaningful green and healthy school projects that have a positive impact on the school, community, and environment.

Schools invited to share their need and enthusiasm for a greener, healthier schoolyard will present at the annual
School Selection Meeting in November 2026 (Date TBD). We will announce the grant recipients in a GSCM newsletter
